the third-generation Cymbidium grower

As the third-generation grower of large-flowered Cymbidiums, I was born into a grower’s family, where Cymbidiums have been cultivated since 1965. Growing up among these beautiful plants, it was a natural progression for me to take over the family business. With my small nursery of 1.05 hectares, I focus on exclusive varieties, cultivated with the highest quality in mind.

My motto, “Dare to be… different,” reflects my approach to doing things differently. This is evident in every aspect of my products. Whether you unwrap a single Cymbidium stem or in a bouquet, you can feel and see the quality of my unique assortment and custom orders.

Sustainability is also a key priority for me. With an eye on innovation and responsibility, I work toward sustainable practices, ensuring my Cymbidiums are as environmentally conscious as they are beautiful.

passion for breeding unique varieties

Alain’s journey into Cymbidium breeding began early. He explains, “It’s a long process—bringing a new variety to market takes about eleven years.” Despite this, he remains driven to create unique options, experimenting with new crosses annually. This dedication results in regular novelties in his collection, showcasing craftsmanship and passion in every bloom.

What is breeding?
Breeding involves fertilising two Cymbidium plants, which leads to the development of a cigar-shaped swelling. After nine months of growth, this is harvested and germinated in a lab. Thousands of seedlings emerge, showcasing diverse traits inherited from their ancestors.

“Every seedling is a gift that unwraps itself,” Alain notes. It takes three years for these seedlings to bloom, and up to three more years to evaluate them for growth, bloom quality, color, yield, and longevity. Once a promising variety is identified, it is sent back to the lab for cloning. This ensures the offspring have the same characteristics as the original plant. Alain collaborates with local Dutch laboratories to support this intricate process.

my experience taking over the family business

Taking over the family business has been a unique experience. I inherited my passion for Cymbidiums from my parents, and they are still regularly involved in the business. While it’s wonderful to have them around, it can also be a bit of pressure—I want them to be proud of me. My father, who walks through the plants every day, shares valuable advice about the crops. It’s been a process of letting go and taking over, but I feel we’ve done it in a respectful, harmonious way.
